northrop-Grumman_BLUENorthrop Grumman has won a potential five-year, $47.8 million contract to build new inertial navigation systems for U.S. Navy ships to replace a system in use for more than 20 years.

The company and service branch will design the Replacement Inertial Navigation System to work with the new Navy assured positioning navigation and timing architecture for use in combat settings, Northrop said Tuesday.

“INS-R will be the foundation of the assured position, navigation and timing suite for virtually all Navy ships,” said Todd Leavitt, vice president of maritime systems business unit at Northrop.

The Navy received two offers for the contract that has a base value of $19,841,177.

Northrop will work to develop a fiber optic gyro sensor and integrate the system into the inertial measuring unit in Charlottesville.

The navigation system will be built to transmit ship positioning, velocity and altitude data to shipboard sensors, combat systems, guns and missile systems.
