Cloudera’s Webster Mudge Outlines Data Defense Steps

Webster Mudge, senior director for technology solutions at Cloudera, has recommended a series of steps for government agencies to mitigate the risk of cyber attacks and prevent data theft.

Mudge wrote in an opinion piece for Federal News Radio published Monday that agencies must adopt a risk management framework to align people and resources needed for data protection work.

He proposed that agencies classify data assets according to the sensitivity of information and vary the level of protection for each category, suggesting that the most sensitive information must be encrypted.

Mudge added that agencies also need to have a holistic view of data forensics, fraud analytics and behavioral analysis, and adopt the active archiving approach of storing and accessing data to avoid extra costs.

Agencies can use behavioral analytics to predict threats by identifying data patterns, according to Mudge.
