U.S. Navy photo by Greg CurryThe Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services program has achieved full deployment approval after Frank Kendall, acquisition chief at the Defense Department, signed an acquisition decision memorandum on the CANES program, Chips magazine reported Friday.

Steven A. Davis writes the CANES program aims to reduce shipboard network workload through information technology modernization and consolidation of data, voice, video and system-management platforms.

The signed ADM gives the U.S. Navy the authority to purchase and install CANES systems on its shore sites and fleet of ships and submarines, according to the Department of the Navy’s magazine.

Business segments of DRS Technologies and CGI secured positions in January on the service branch’s potential eight-year $2.5 billion contract to supply CANES system production units.

Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, General Dynamics‘ C4 systems business, Serco’s U.S subsidiary and Global Technical Systems also won positions on the CANES contract the Navy awarded in August 2014.

The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command tapped Northrop for the first CANES contract in February 2012.
