The Defense Information Systems Agency and Lockheed Martin have begun efforts to implement a common security stack as part of the Joint Information Environment in a set of new tools planned for the Global Information Grid, GCN reported Monday.
Lockheed acts as the primary contractor on a potential seven-year, $1.9 billion Global Information Grid Services Management-Operation contract the company won from DISA in 2012.
William Welsh writes the Joint Regional Security Stacks program will work to provide DISA and service branches a common platform to view various network security areas and manage network transmissions between end-user devices and Internet-based access points.
Chris Kearns, vice president of enterprise information technology solutions at Lockheed Martin, said the deployment of JRSS will require the installation of new tools for both classified and unclassified areas and the transition to Multiprotocol Label Switching platform in order to meet the Defense Department‘s required bandwidth capability.
Kearns noted that Lockheed and the rest of the GSM-O project team will collaborate on the deployment of software-defined networking, which will involve the use of software rules that will work to respond to disruption-causing events.
“It has huge benefits for security, operations and cost efficiencies,†he added.
DISA is set to introduce on Sept. 28 a new configuration management system designed to help global grid users better track data network’s assets, Welsh reports.
