PARCXerox subsidiary PARC has secured additional funds from the U.S. Energy Department to further develop a technology for processing and recycling scrap aluminum materials.

PARC is developing an aluminum alloy detection system through the Modern Electro/Thermochemical Advancements for Light-metal Systems Program, run by DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, Xerox said Monday.

“Our technology could change the way we recycle, and we’re excited ARPA-E is encouraging us to continue development,” said Craig Eldershaw, senior research engineer at PARC’s Hardware Systems Lab.

The system employs an electrochemical diagnostic probe designed to identify alloy agents in scrap metal pieces and Xerox said the probe demonstrated a 92 percent accuracy rate during a test.

DOE asked PARC to build 20 pieces of the metal sorting technology for field testing.
