The Department of State has cleared a potential $114 million foreign military sale to Bulgaria covering the delivery of 218 Javelin FGM-148F missiles and 107 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units.
Javelin Joint Venture, a partnership of RTX and Lockheed Martin, will be the sale’s prime contractor, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Friday.
The sale also includes U.S. government and contractor support, such as technical assistance, training and logistics services, the agency added. It further noted that the deal will help boost the security of Bulgaria, a NATO ally vital to Europe’s political and economic stability. The sale will not alter the basic European military balance, the DSCA noted.
In addition to the United States, the military forces in some 20 countries uses the FGM-148 Javelin, a man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank missile. In Europe, its users include the armed forces of the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Georgia, Ireland, Lithuania, Norway and Ukraine.
The missile purchase is in line with the Bulgarian National Assembly’s approval of armament plans for battalion combat groups within a mechanized brigade, Defense Industry Europe reported. The plans also include the purchase of Stryker armored vehicles that the Bulgarian legislators approved in September 2023.
