HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding subsidiary completed propulsion and supporting equipment tests of the new Calhoun ship at sea.
The vessel will be the tenth Legend-class national security cutter to be delivered by Ingalls Shipbuilding to the U.S. Coast Guard, HII said Friday.
The Calhoun, also known as WMSL 759, will be used by the service branch for missions ranging from defense operations, to disaster relief, drug interdiction and illegal fishing monitoring.
“Our team will continue to prepare NSC 10 for the next set of trials and ensure that this ship will be ready to undertake the most challenging Coast Guard missions,” said Amanda Whitaker, manager of Ingalls Shipbuilding’s NSC Program.
The cutter is named after USCG Master Chief Charles Calhoun, who served in the Navy during World War II and became the Coast Guard’s first master chief petty officer in 1969.
