Joel Dillon, vice president and technical lead of the U.S. Army portfolio at Booz Allen Hamilton, said digitized battlespace operations, virtual training and 5G will drive military leadership amid the current threat landscape.
Dillon wrote in an opinion piece published Monday on National Defense Magazine that defense officials have recognized the role of 5G implementation in supporting augmented and virtual reality-based training as well as connected architecture.
He noted that the connected digital battlespace integrated with machine learning and artificial intelligence is meant to support the deployment of 5G for VR training and other applications like edge computing, integrated sensor network operations, data analytics and real-time threat intelligence.
Warfighters operating within a digital battlefield require linked systems and devices that leverage open architectures to eliminate redundancies and free up mental and physical tasks, said Dillon.
“A warÂfighter’s kit can — and should — consolidate, streamline and improve their lives in the same way that smartphones do our daily lives in the civilian world,†he noted.
