Raytheon Technologies has started installing an air and missile defense radar system into an Aegis Flight III guided-missile destroyer in preparation for the future USS Jack H. Lucas' planned delivery to the U.S. Navy in fiscal year 2023.
The AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar is built by Raytheon's missiles and defense business to cover a broader range and resist man-made and environmental clutter using its four arrays, the company said Tuesday.
The radar also features electronic protection capabilities and updated accuracy to help the service branch respond to potential threats.
Capt. Jason Hall, program manager for above-water sensors at the Navy's program executive office for integrated warfare systems, said the radar will potentially enable ships to operate in cluttered and jammed areas.
DDG 125 is the first Flight III destroyer to use AN/SPY-6(V)1.
Radar installation is being performed at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where HII is working on the future USS Jack H. Lucas as part of a five-ship contract with the Navy.
