GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor foundry based in Santa Clara, California, has agreed with the Department of Defense to drive semiconductor chip manufacturing to help power the department’s technologies for air, land, sea and space missions.
GlobalFoundries said Monday it will produce chips using 45nm silicon on insulator technologies at its Fab 8 facility in Malta, New York, ahead of deliveries to the DOD which will begin in 2023.
The deal comes after Fab 8 achieved Export Administration Regulations export control classification numbers as well as compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations.
GlobalFoudries noted that it intends to expand the Fab 8 facility to accommodate work with industry and government clients.
DOD and GlobalFoundries are also discussing plans to certify Fab 8 for Trusted Accreditation.
In a separate notice, the DOD said the deal serves as a precursor to the CHIPS for America Act which seeks to reshore microelectronics production.
Tom Caulfield, CEO of GlobalFoundries, said the agreement comes as part of the foundry’s efforts to drive domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity to support sensitive aerospace and defense applications.
GlobalFoundries also has the Fab 9 facility in Vermont and Fab 10 in East Fishkill that house chip production for the DOD.
