The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is looking for public input on plans to launch a challenge focused on developing an open stack of 5G technologies to support the Department of Defense’s missions.
The Department of Commerce component said in a notice of inquiry released Monday that the planned 5G Challenge will focus on helping NTIA leverage engineering expertise in line with the DOD’s 5G initiative.
NTIA also seeks to use the competition to maximize the use of open 5G technology stacks on an expedited timeline, the agency noted.
According to the document, interfaces based on an open-architecture framework serve as “a key innovation†in the 5G ecosystem.Â
The 5G Challenge comes as part of efforts to met objectives under the U.S. government’s 5G strategy that calls for collaborative efforts between academia, international allies and industry to implement policies and acquisition strategies that reinforce diversity in the 5G market.
Junaid Islam, 5G security adviser to the National Spectrum Consortium, told Nextgov in an email that NTIA seeks to build an open-stack ecosystem to foster interoperability between offerors while establishing a 5G architecture that does not require reconfiguration, the publication reported Friday.
Responses to the notice are due Feb. 10.
