Planet has been awarded a second NASA contract to expand the company’s subscription service for satellite imagery across agency-backed research initiatives.
The company said Thursday it will provide Earth observation data to help NASA-sponsored researchers gain insights and discover information that can support studies.
Last year, Planet received a contract under which 35 lead researchers who were studying Earth’s climate as part of a pilot program.
Several research teams also utilized data from the PlanetScope monitoring system and repeated image captures during the satellite revisit time in efforts to undertand how climate change affects glaciers. One group leveraged the data to investigate causal factors in landslides in the Himalayas.
PlanetScope is designed to collect high-resolution imagery of different places on the planet once a day, including remote locations of the Arctic region.
