The Defense Information Systems Agency has extended the deadline for responses to its request for information on dark fiber technology which will support the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud environment, Washington Business Journal reported Thursday.
Dark fiber is fiber-optic cable that is still connected to existing network infrastructure, but currently not being utilized to transmit data. DISA intends to lease a fiber-optic network that can handle traffic, reduce latency, ensure rapid data transmission and implement secure point-to-point controls for private communications.
The agency aims to use the dark fiber to service 13 locations within the continental U.S. and is seeking pricing information on available capabilities within a 10-year period.
Interested parties may submit feedback until Aug. 1.
