Viasat has received a contract from the Space Enterprise Consortium to provide and demonstrate a satellite designed to deliver extended situational awareness for service members.
The company said Wednesday it will deliver a low earth orbit satellite in support of Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles XVI program.
The satellite would work to boost the coverage of Link 16 networks for accommodation in congested environments across multiple domains.
The LEO unit is also intended to function as part of a hybrid adaptive network, a communications approach that allows for user activity across commercial and government satellite networks.
The AFRL-led program aims to provide the U.S. military and allies with a beyond line-of-site network, as opposed to just line-of-sight, for accelerated, secure and resilient communications.
