Lockheed Martin has received certification from UL for compliance with a set of safety guidelines to mitigate hazards in 3D printing facilities.
UL said Monday it certified Lockheed’s Additive Design and Manufacturing Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., for adhering to the Outline of Investigation for Additive Manufacturing Facility Safety Management.
“This facility builds on our 60 years of Silicon Valley research and decades of satellite manufacturing expertise,” said Thomas Malko, vice president of engineering and technology at Lockheed’s space business.
The global safety science organization reviewed the aerospace and defense company’s processes to ensure the safety of materials, equipment and its facility in general.
UL 3400 is meant to guide industries in identifying and reducing risks to additive manufacturing assets and operations.
The guideline consolidates safety requirements from various organizations and firms such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Fire Protection Association, UL and ASTM International.
