A Huntington Ingalls Industries division has commenced work to overhaul the USS Boise attack submarine as part of a contract with the U.S. Navy.
The company said Monday its Newport News Shipbuilding business will maintain and repair the Los Angeles-class submarine pierside that arrived Monday at a shipyard in Virginia before the craft’s transfer to a dry dock by January of next year.
The 25-month project will include system upgrades and is scheduled for completion in 2021.
“We have been preparing for Boise’s availability and looking forward to returning the submarine back to the fleet,” said Bill Smith, vice president of fleet support programs at Newport News.
The company received a $385.7 million contract in October of last year to help the Navy plan and implement engineered overhaul activities for the submarine.
The service branch accepted delivery of Boise from Newport News in September 1992.
