The U.S. Navy has announced details on the upcoming commission ceremony of LCS-12, an Independence-class littoral combat ship to be named USS Omaha.
The ceremony for the Austal USA-built ship will take place 1:00 p.m. EST, Saturday, at Broadway pier, San Diego, California, the Navy said Thursday.
LCS-12 is the eleventh Independence variant of its ship type to join the Navy’s fleet, and will be the fourth to be named Omaha.
Former U.S. senator Bob Kerrey, Nebraska’s 35th governor, will perform the ceremony’s principal address, while Omaha-based philanthropist Susie Buffett holds the role of the LCS-12’s sponsor.
“American craftsmen in Mississippi, Alabama, around the country have made USS Omaha possible”†said Richard Spencer, secretary of the Navy.
LCSs are modular ships designed with capacities to participate in surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures operations.
