General Dynamics‘ Electric Boat subsidiary has received a potential $20.6 million contract modification to help the U.S. Navy plan and execute post-delivery activities for the service branch’s latest Virginia-class submarine.
The Defense Department said Wednesday Electric Boat will procure long-lead time materials needed to alter, maintain, repair and test USS Washington throughout the post-delivery work period.
Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ Newport News Shipbuilding division constructed and delivered the submarine to the Navy in May.
The Navy commissioned USS Washington during a ceremony that occurred Saturday at the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.
DoD noted the service branch will obligate the full modification amount from its fiscal 2015, 2016 and 2017 shipbuilding and conversion funds at the time of award.
Electric Boat will perform 99 percent of work in Newport News, Virginia, and the rest in Groton, Connecticut through February 2018.
