Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory has been recognized at the 2017 Defense Innovation Summit in Tampa, Florida for its high-bandwidth, free space optical communications system.
The APL laser communications system landed TechConnect‘s defense innovation award which recognizes potential benefits of technologies to national and warfighter security, Johns Hopkins said Tuesday.
JHUAPL also had an opportunity to demonstrate its communications system to a panel of Defense Department personnel who represented the Central Command, Special Operations Command, U.S. Marine Corps, Navy and other defense organizations.
The system offers an optical communications capacity of up to 10 gigabits per second while on the move, onboard vessels at sea and across near-shore environments.
