SpaceX has asked the Federal Communications Commission to consider the company’s future low-Earth orbit satellite constellation as a potential recipient of the Connect America Fund award, Space News reported Tuesday.
The report said FCC proposed rules that would exclude satellite constellations from participation in the CAF program due to the low latency of such platform.
FCC aims to provide voice and broadband services for approximately 23 million people in the U.S. who do not have internet access.
SpaceX applied for FCC approval of two constellations designed to have a latency that range from 25 to 35 milliseconds, the report noted.
The company also urged the agency to omit a standalone voice service requirement for CAF Auction 2 resources.
FCC plans to award up to $198 million in voice and broadband services in the next 10 years.
