Cambridge, England-based genome research organization Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute has begun to offer “science-as-a-service†offering built on Red Hat’s OpenStack and CloudForms open-source technology platforms.
The science-as-a-service offering works to standardize the institute’s cloud computing services, facilitate collaboration with biotechnology startups and help users run diverse workloads in cloud environments, Red Hat said Wednesday.
Red Hat’s OpenStack platform is an open-source infrastructure-as-a-service software platform that works to help organizations field and scale their information technology infrastructure, while CloudForms is the company’s offering for hybrid cloud management.
The Sanger Institute’s Red Hat open platforms-based service catalog includes 6,000 processor cores, 100 gigabit networking service and three petabytes of storage designed to help internal users and tenants on its new research facility at Wellcome Genome Campus meet their scientific computing requirements.
Red Hat’s OpenStack works to help users perform global data analysis by allowing them to “create and share virtual machine images of their own creation and to find and spin up images from elsewhere,†said Tim Cutts, head of scientific computing at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
