An Orbital ATK-produced 60-millimeter mortar cartridge has obtained full materiel release approval from the U.S. Joint Munitions Command that designates the munition as safe and operationally suitable for use.
Orbital ATK said Thursday it has manufactured more than 12,000 M1061 mortar cartridges for the U.S. Army and other customers and 1,000 were deployed ahead of the FMR.
M1061 was developed through the joint efforts of Orbital ATK, Saab Group‘s Saab Bofors Dynamics subsidiary and the Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center.
Orbital ATK noted M1061 is designed to build on the mortar’s effectiveness and insensitive munitions characteristics.
M1061 is built to feature Orbital ATK’s Lethality Enhanced Ordnance technology which has been tested on warheads that range 0.5-250 pounds in size.
LEO technology works to help warheads achieve optimized wide-area effects, Orbital ATK noted.
