Cameron Chehreh, federal chief technology officer at Dell, has said chief information officers at agencies should adopt incremental modernization strategies to update legacy applications.
Chehreh told MeriTalk writer Mary Tobin in an interview posted Monday that legacy applications represent many of the challenges federal CIOs will face as agencies work to comply with the Office of Management and Budget‘s Data Center Optimization Initiative.
“Many [legacy applications] have been in place for years and there’s a reluctance to work on them or have any sort of significant disruption given their 24/7 mission-critical nature,” said Chehreh.
He added that CIOs should transition legacy applications to a cloud-based format and modernize endpoints to support compliance and address vulnerabilities in the user community.
Chehreh recommended hybrid cloud strategies as the best investment agencies can make to acquire a “future-ready” infrastructure since hybrid clouds provide options to create modern interfaces as well as preserve legacy risk postures and data.
