The U.S. Navy has awarded an $18.9 million contract modification to a General Dynamics subsidiary to continue to develop a payload module for the service branch’s Virginia-class attack submarines.
General Dynamics Electric Boat will use the funds to acquire two VPM pre-production setups necessary for the manufacture of VPM payload tubes, the company said Tuesday.
The VPM will consist of four large-diameter payload tubes that will be integrated into the submarines’ new hull section.
The modification increases the ceiling value of the company’s Virginia-class Lead Yard Services contract with the Navy to $1.46 billion.
