Parsons has secured a contract to provide management services for a tolling system design and installation project within a 10-mile segment of Interstate 66 in Virginia.
The company said Monday the project encompasses work to install an all-lane system for toll collections from I-495 in the Capital Beltway to U.S. Route 29 in Rosslyn to help address traffic congestion in and out of Washington, D.C., during peak hours.
“Managed lanes, tolling, and user fees are becoming a transportation infrastructure funding option of choice,†noted Michael Johnson, a Parsons group president.
Parsons noted the system will work to allow occupancy vehicles to continue to travel the highway section for free while single-occupant vehicles will pay a rush-hour toll depending on the traffic volume and all travel lanes will remain free to all motorists during off-peak periods.
The Commonwealth of Virginia plans to use revenue from tolls to expand bus services, bike and pedestrian access, modernize intersection on parallel roads and implement travel demand technology.
