The Naval Sea Systems Command has started to transition a new suite of “Wide Field of View” night vision goggles to personnel within the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command.
The U.S. Navy said Friday the WFOV NVG units are designed to double view fields of traditional night vision models and support, depth perception, situational awareness and movement speed for warfighters through 80-degree field of view features.
Kent Optronics received a $47.6 million basic ordering agreement in May to develop wide field-of-view night vision technology for the Navy, while NAVSEA’s expeditionary missions program office managed the Visual Augmentation Systems program for the service branch.
Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane optical scientists reported a 14 percent improvement in combat efficiency as well as a 28 percent hike in movement speed through the WFOV NVG system, according to the Navy.
