BAE Systems plc‘s 753,000-square-foot specialization center for Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers at Portsmouth Naval Base in the U.K. nears completion.
The Queen Elizabeth Class Center of Specialization will house employees of Team Portsmouth — a partnership between the company and the U.K.’s ministry of defense, BAEÂ said Tuesday.
The team includes engineers, logisticians and waterfront staff who will work to plan and deliver maintenance services for the carriers, the company added.
“This center will be the home not just for the carriers; it will also be home for the military and civilian people who support them,” said Mike Howarth, managing director of BAE’s U.K. maritime services unit.
He noted that the construction of the power station and renovation of the jetty are in the final stages.
Mark Lancaster, U.K. minister for defense personnel and veterans, added that the estimated $147 million investment in the naval base will support efforts to sustain thousands of jobs in the region.
