BAE Systems has secured a $38 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy to provide 300 missile canisters for the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System.
The company said Wednesday the modification requires canisters of various configurations that will work to store, transport and launch numerous types of guided missiles such as the Tomahawk, Standard Missile-3, Standard Missile-6, and Evolved SeaSparrow Missile.
BAE added the canisters will be designed to hold rocket motor exhaust and support flyout during missile launches.
The original five-year, base plus options contract was awarded in 2013 to support the Navy’s canister needs through fiscal year 2017, BAE noted.
The modification will extend work through 2018 at BAE’s facility in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
