Lacey Wean, senior account manager of geospatial solutions at Carahsoft Technology, has said adoption of a hybrid geographic information system can help government agencies facilitate interoperability with current software platforms and cut licensing costs.
Wean wrote in an article published Thursday that a hybrid GIS platform built on open source software can allow agencies to implement migration strategies on a gradual basis.
“By migrating to a hybrid proprietary and open source model, agencies can ease the introduction to new software for end users by minimizing change with an application or database implementation,” she added.
Wean noted that the implementation of a hybrid GIS tool could also help agencies avoid lock-in arrangements with a specific vendor amid evolving information technology requirements and budget constraints.
