Lockheed Martin has commenced the production of lasers with commercial fiber components for the U.S. Army based on a modular design that supports varied laser power as per mission requirement.
The company said Monday the first laser will have a power of 60 kilowatts, which the Army can extend to 120 kilowatts due to its modularity.
“With modular lasers, the possibility of a complete system failure due to a single-point disruption is dramatically lessened,” said Iain McKinnie, business development lead for laser sensors and systems at Lockheed’s systems and training business.
He added that the modular design also works to bring down production costs.
Lockheed will manufacture the lasers at its facility in Bothell, Washington.
