Raytheon researchers have developed a guided missile system using a three-dimensional printing technology.
The missile system consists of rocket engines, fins, and guidance and control system components, according to a feature posted on the company’s website.
Raytheon also looked to create electrical circuit materials, housing for gallium nitride transmitters and guided artillery shell fins through additive manufacturing, the story says.
“You can design internal features that might be impossible to machine,” said Travis Mayberry, a Raytheon engineer.
“We’re trying new designs for thermal improvements and lightweight structures, things we couldn’t achieve with any other manufacturing method,†Mayberry added.
