A pair of Energy Department national laboratories, IBM and Nvidia will build two facilities at the campuses of both labs to facilitate development of applications for large-scale data computing platforms.
IBM said Monday the Sierra and Summit supercomputers are scheduled for delivery to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2017 under a contract awarded by DOE in April 2014.
The centers will house enterprise and government engineers and provide them access to Nvidia’s Tesla graphic processing unit accelerators, NVLink interconnect platform for processing units and IBM’s Power processors to create application codes for the supercomputers.
Both supercomputers are scheduled to be operational in 2018, IBM said.
“Application code innovation is a vital component of making sure our facilities are prepared to take advantage of the performance of the new supercomputers,†said Michel McCoy, program director for advanced simulation and computing at Lawrence Livermore.
DOE and its private sector partners will work on applications for research in climate research, energy, nuclear security, biophysics, cosmology, medicine and astrophysics.
