Law enforcement agencies in California and North Carolina have started to adopt Microsoft’s cloud platform due to the offering’s compliance with the security regulations of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services.
The Los Angeles Police Department and North Carolina-based Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are among the agencies that access fingerprint files, surveillance videos and other criminal records via Microsoft Azure Government, Michael Donlan, vice president of state and local government division at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post published Wednesday.
Donlan cited the importance of the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s guidelines, which require compliance of cloud platforms with the security policy of FBI’s CJIS, to ensure protection of criminal data.
He also noted several questions for police departments to consider when choosing a cloud service provider, including compliance with security standards for criminal justice data and the need to subject cloud personnel to FBI background checks through fingerprints.
