U.S. Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James has said the military service expects to hold a competition for Long-Range Strike Bomber subsystems that will not be part of the LRS-B development and initial production contract, Bloomberg reported Monday.
Anthony Capaccio writes James told Bloomberg the Air Force could name the prime contractor for the LRS-B program in August.
Northrop Grumman and a Boeing–Lockheed Martin team are vying to build the military branch’s future bombers.
Bloomberg reports the Air Force could spend more than $55 billion to acquire up to 100 LRS-B planes.
James was quoted as saying the branch will offer more cost and acquisition data as the program proceeds but it will be very careful in declassifying technical information that could be obtained by adversaries.
