IBM has obtained a U.S. patent for a computing engine designed to help organizations secure cross-border transfers of personal information in cloud environments while complying with data transfer laws.
The technology is intended to alert enterprise users of any privacy issue when they move data between two countries and to offer possible solutions based on information the company has put into the engine, IBM said Wednesday.
“Global businesses today face significant challenges in protecting personal data and keeping up with regulations in an environment where cross-border flows of information are more important than ever,†said Christina Peters, IBM chief privacy officer.
“Our new invention provides a privacy technique that could help businesses navigate an increasingly complex landscape and help companies proactively manage risk,” Peters added.
The company says it invests as much as $6 billion a year in research and development and works to find new security and analytics methods.
IBM recently introduced a portfolio of technology products designed to protect information and applications in cloud environments.
