DRS Technologies and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems will jointly pursue a U.S. Army tank defense contract and offer a Rafael-built Trophy active protection system, DoD Buzz reported Wednesday.
Kris Osborn writes the vehicle-mounted Trophy system works to detect and engage enemy fire through the use of a radar, processor and on-board computer.
“Trophy will…compute an intercept point in space away from the platform and, if the threat poses a danger to the platform, it will launch a countermeasure to defeat the threat away from the vehicle,â€Â Mike O’Leary, director of business development at DRS, told the publication.
The technology features small explosives attached to a gimbal atop the vehicle to intercept incoming rounds from enemy positions, according to the report.
“Trophy will not only knock an RPG out of the sky but it will also calculate the shooter’s location,â€Â O’Leary told DoD Buzz.
He also said Rafael designed Trophy with M1 Abrams tanks, Strykers and HMMWVs configurations.
