IBM will offer sustainability researchers and scientists access to the company’s World Community Grid supercomputing platform through an estimated $60 million in computing power to support scientific research.
The company will accept project proposals from interested parties studying issues related to climate change and provide the selected researchers access to computing power donated by volunteers, IBM said Tuesday.
This project is intended to support the White House’s new Climate Data Initiative, IBM says.
“At IBM, we hope that the equivalent of 100,000 years of computing time per scientist will speed the next major breakthrough to help the world meet the challenge of climate change,” said Stanley Litow, IBM vice president for corporate citizenship and corporate affairs.
Litow, who is also president of the IBM International Foundation, said scientists often do not have enough funding to allow access to supercomputers to help achieve their research objectives.
IBM’s World Community Grid virtual supercomputer has already partnered with the University of Virginia on its Computing for Sustainable Water project, Harvard University on its Clean Energy Project and the University of Washington on its Nutritious Rice for the World program.
“Through his Climate Data Initiative, President Obama is calling for all hands on deck to unleash data and technology in ways that will make businesses and communities more resilient to climate change,” said John Holdren, White House science adviser.
