Inmarsat and Hughes Network Systems are partnering to design a communications terminal for police forces and other government departments to communicate discreetly.
The companies will build the Low Profile BGAN terminal to function as a “rapid-to-deploy, lay-flat, coverable, covert” terminal for mounting on flat surfaces outdoors or burying under a layer of material, Inmarsat announced Tuesday.
“A system that can be mounted discreetly is of great interest to government departments,” said Peter Dingley, vice president of offer development for Inmarsat Global Government.
Dingley added the companies aim to help “police forces and similar agencies that need to leave unattended equipment or maintain a low profile, to overseas agencies whose satcom equipment become a target for malicious damage.”
The terminal is intended to provide high-speed data connections for devices that transmit videos, audio or other data.
Inmarsat and Hughes have scheduled end user testing for later this year and plan to release 100 terminals to market by the third quarter of Inmarsat’s 2014 fiscal year.
