The U.S. Army has selected Lockheed Martin for a $22 million contract to provide the Apache helicopters of the Royal Saudi Land Forces Aviation Command with targeting and night vision sensors.
For the three-year contract, Lockheed Martin will provide the command with Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensors tools and test equipment for maintenance of the system, Lockheed Martin announced Tuesday.
Work on the contract will commence in first-quarter 2014 and is expected to extend through 2017.
Mike Taylor, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control international fleet support director for M-TADS/PNVS noted that Saudi Arabia is the second international customer to contract this type of special repair activity support contract.
“Fielded in 2005, the M-TADS/PNVS system provides Apache attack helicopter pilots with long-range, precision engagement and pilotage capabilities for mission success and flight safety in day, night and adverse weather missions,” the company said.
Lockheed added that the sensors are meant to provide Apache aircrews with enhanced image resolution which helps the helicopters deliver situational awareness to ground troops outside detection ranges.
