Ball Aerospace has delivered to Vandenberg Space Force Base the MethaneSAT satellite which, once in orbit, will work to identify global sources of methane -- a major contributor to climate warming -- with the help of its two advanced spectrometers. Ball Aerospace said Wednesday that MethaneSAT's instruments will make it possible to track methane emissions at a regional level as well as at the level of individual sources, complementing current capabilities that focus on either scale or precision.

The performance of Northrop Grumman's second-stage intercontinental ballistic missile solid rocket motor has been demonstrated before the U.S. Air Force at the branch's Arnold Engineering Development Complex in Tennessee. The company announced Tuesday that it conducted a live, static-fire test of the LGM-35A Sentinel ICBM stage-two rocket motor through a high-altitude and space flight simulation inside a vacuum chamber.

RTX business Raytheon, in partnership with the U.S. Army, recently conducted a live fire demonstration of the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor, the next-generation air and missile defense radar of the military service. RTX said Wednesday that the demo saw LTAMDS acquire and track a tactical ballistic missile surrogate, hand off tracking data to the Integrated Battle Command System, then guide a PATRIOT Advanced Capability - 3 Cost Reduction Initiative missile launched by the IBCS to intercept the target.

Ball Aerospace will manage a concept study for the NASA Explorers Program to understand the magnetism of the sun and how it affects space, Earth and other planets. The company said Tuesday the Chromospheric Magnetism Explorer mission concept would use a near ultraviolet spectropolarimeter to make novel observations of the solar magnetic field in the chromosphere to learn how magnetic energy buildup leads to solar flares and coronal mass ejections.
