TYSONS CORNER, VA, February 6, 2020 — Iridium Communications (Nasdaq: IRDM) collaborated with Amazon Web Services to introduce a service that will enable clients to use internet-of-things platforms on a global level though satellite-enabled cloud technology, GovCon Wire reported Jan. 29.

The International Maritime Organization has authorized Iridium Communications to provide Global Maritime Distress and Safety System satellite services for the UN agency’s maritime emergency operations.

Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium Communications and a 2019 Wash100 award recipient, told Bloomberg in an audio interview posted Tuesday about the company’s use of SpaceX-built rockets and the role of the private sector in space exploration. He said SpaceX and other launch service providers have helped drive down the cost for a lot of satellite suppliers.

Satelles, a Reston, Va.-based satellite time and location services provider, has raised $26M in a round of Series C financing led by C5 Capital and will use the investment to advance product development and expand its partner network and sales and marketing initiatives.

Iridium Communications has received a potential five-year, $76M contract from the Defense Information Systems Agency to update servers, network infrastructure and equipment for the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services Gateway.

Iridium Communications CEO Matt Desch said he believes the industry needs new regulations that would mitigate failed satellites and other space debris in orbit, Space Intel Report reported Wednesday. Desch, a 2019 Wash100 winner, said those regulations should include a policy that would ground satellite and rocket developers in the event of an in-orbit failure and require them to determine the cause of the problem.

Iridium Communications has received a Mobile Satellite Users Association award for a satellite-powered global broadband service that facilitates wireless communications for government agencies, enterprises and individuals.
