Hewlett Packard Enterprise has secured an other transaction authority agreement from the Defense Information Systems Agency to build a prototype capability as part of a program that seeks to modernize the x86 server architecture to “achieve a unified operating experience” while supporting secure hybrid cloud and multicloud deployments. Hewlett Packard Enterprise will send to the International Space Station a commercial off-the-shelf supercomputer as part of an ISS National Laboratory-sponsored experiment meant to further assess high-performance computing in space and improve research capabilities on the orbiting lab. The updated HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 is based on HPE ProLiant and EdgeLine servers and is expected to launch no later than Jan. 29 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida as part of Northrop Grumman’s 20th commercial resupply services mission to the ISS, the national lab said Tuesday.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is in the process of testing Crossroads, the successor to a supercomputer used by the National Nuclear Security Administration to monitor U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. The Hewlett Packard Enterprise-built Crossroads will replace Trinity, the first platform under NNSA's Advanced Simulation and Computing Program, as part of continuous upgrades to support large data sets for stockpile simulation and computation. Microsoft has teamed up with Hewlett Packard Enterprise to connect its Azure cloud to the International Space Station through HPE’s Spaceborne Computer-2. SBC-2 is set to fly aboard Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus spacecraft as part of Northrop’s 15th commercial resupply mission to the orbiting laboratory on Feb. 20, and will bring artificial intelligence, cloud connectivity and edge computing capabilities to the ISS.
