Kimberley Williams, chief strategist for Informatica‘s public sector practice, urges government agencies to keep pace with the commercial sector and look into how the Internet of Things can transform public sector services and operations.
Williams wrote in a Federal Times piece published Thursday that the government is wary of the IoT’s relevance to the sector even though IoT has developed in industry through technology innovations that connect people, data and other “things.”
“The end game is not to deliver new, faster, smaller, cooler electronics; the end game is to create solutions that let devices connecting to the Internet interact and share data . . . or find connections that may have been previously undetectable,” she says.
This could present an opportunity for government to transform leadership, legislation, service delivery, policy and regulation, Williams says.
She recommends agencies start with a master data management project to link systems or citizen records, or a project on big data and analytics about risk factors in cybersecurity and other areas of concern.
