The U.S. has approved the Japanese government’s request to purchase $150 million worth of follow-on technical support and related equipment for Aegis class destroyers.

The Department of State reviewed and cleared the proposed deal, with the required certification transmitted to Congress, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday.

Under the possible foreign military sale, Japan will receive computer software updates, system integration and testing services, sustainment and operational support, and other elements of logistics and program support.

The Aegis computer program maintenance services will provide the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force with software patches and adaptation data support to ensure the effective and safe operations of the Aegis Combat Systems suite.

In addition, the engineering support will enable the JMSDF to address potential malfunctions with the ACS suite.

Lockheed Martin is the principal contractor supporting the agreement, which calls for the temporary deployment of five U.S. government and two contractor representatives to Japan.
