Austal USA has started building new infrastructure to the south of its waterfront facility in Mobile, Alabama.
The expansion work includes an assembly building, waterfront improvements and a shiplift system, the company said Tuesday.
The construction project is scheduled to be completed and become fully operational by the summer of 2026.
The project will build an assembly bay to install large steel modules for U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ships. Austal will also construct a shiplift to launch completed vessels and bring ships back for repair and maintenance services.
When completed, the new structure will consist of three bays to accommodate the Coast Guard’s patrol cutter vessels and the Navy’s ocean surveillance steel ships. The assembly bays are also designed to manufacture modules for submarine and other surface ship programs.
The latest investment will provide Austal with a combined workspace of around 1.5 million square feet, making the facility the company’s largest operation.
Commenting on the expansion project, Austal USA President Michelle Kruger said the investment underscores the company’s commitment to support the implementation of the U.S. national defense industrial strategy.
Austal USA has selected Pearlson & Pearlson, Kiewit Infrastructure South and Pearlson Shiplift Corporation to work on the construction project.
