A partnership between United Launch Alliance and Ball Aerospace will select more than 20 K-12 teams to design and build payloads through the 2019 Student Rocket Launch competition.

Participants will aim to guide payload systems to a designated ground-based target for a chance to win as much as $5K and use the prize money to support a nonprofit organization or their school, ULA said Thursday.

“The Student Rocket Launch is a chance to experience what it’s like to be a part of a rocket launch and mission,” said Tory Bruno, president and CEO at ULA.

“These students dream big, solve problems, build hardware, watch their payloads blast off on a rocket and then evaluate the results,” Bruno added.

ULA plans to select and launch 27 payloads on a company intern-made Future Heavy Super Sport rocket in summer of 2019. The company noted 13 entries can qualify for the prize competition and the rest can fly as non-competitors.

The program is meant to boost students’ interest in technical fields that support the country’s space programs.
