Victoria Nuland, former U.S. ambassador to NATO, has been elected by the board of directors to serve as CEO of the Center for a New American Security.
CNAS said Tuesday Nuland will work with President Richard Fontaine to help address defense and national security issues and succeed Michele Flournoy, who will help lead the center’s Next Generation National Security Leaders Fellowship.
Nuland is a senior adviser at Boston Consulting Group.
She previously served as a senior counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group and a non-resident senior fellow at Brookings Institution.
The 32-year U.S. diplomat spent four years as an assistant secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs and as special envoy and chief negotiator on the Treaty on Conventional Arms Control in Europe.
Robert Work, former deputy secretary of the Defense Department, has been named senior counselor for defense at CNAS.
He will offer advisory support for the center’s defense studies, develop warfare-related analyses and oversee the Evolving the Future Force Initiative, Artificial Intelligence Task Force and other CNAS programs.
Work previously served as CEO of CNAS and returned to the Washington, D.C.-based think tank in September 2017 as a distinguished senior fellow for defense and national security.
He also serves on the board of directors of Raytheon and sits on the advisory board of Govini.
He spent nearly three decades in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as U.S. Navy undersecretary.
