Twenty student teams in grades six through nine from across the U.S. have been named as regional winners in the eCYBERMISSION competition after their “missions” to address community challenges were selected from among 80 finalists.
The National Science Teachers Association, which collaborated with the Army Educational Outreach Program for the event, said Tuesday the teams will advance to the National Judging and Educational Event in June, where a national winner will be chosen from each grade level.
“The U.S. Army commends the students for accepting the challenge to improve their communities and invites them to continue their educational journey with the opportunities offered by AEOP,” said Louie Lopez, program manager for eCYBERMISSION.
The web-based competition asks participants to develop solutions for local issues in alternative energy sources, environment, food, health and fitness, force and motion, national security and safety, robotics and technology.
Prizes for the regional winners include a $2,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington for the national competition.
Five national finalists will also receive $5,000 STEM-in-Action grants from AEOP to implement their projects in their communities.
