North Star Scientific has secured a $14 million contract to provide a range of support services for the replacement of a high-power amplifier for a U.S. Navy data communications platform.
The contract covers design, engineering development, fabrication and prototype testing on the new 1,000-watt amplifier for the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, the Defense Department said Wednesday.
The replacement is in support of the Link 16 datalink and related capabilities on the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye early-warning aircraft, DoD added.
Work under the contract runs through November 2020 and is part of a Small Business Innovation Research Phase III program on an L-band solid-state high-power amplifier for airborne platforms.
The Navy obligated $3.72 million from fiscal 2017 research, development, test and evaluation funds at the time of the contract award, with the Naval Air Warfare Center aircraft division serving as the contract authority.
NSS operates from Kapolei, Hawaii — where 71.3 percent of the contract work will occur — and offers design, manufacturing and support services for communications and radar equipment to the private, military and civilian sectors.
