Lockheed Martin BlueLockheed Martin has revealed its upgraded MK 41 Vertical Launching System production line that seeks to build on a U.S. Navy contract awarded in December 2014 requiring the company to continue its delivery of MK 41 systems.

The company said Thursday the VLS production line at its Middle River, Maryland, facility has added 80 tools in an effort to boost production flow and modernize the site that produced its first launching system in 1984.

Lockheed noted the VLS facility update has helped create more than 150 jobs in Baltimore and is expected to continue further through the contract period ending 2022.

MK 41 VLS is designed to support anti-air, anti-submarine, surface-to-surface and strike missile launches and has been integrated into approximately 200 U.S. and allied navy ships, Lockheed said.
